Green clay is one of those remedies that you must have in your home, especially if you suffer from pimples and open pores, oily skin and mixed type of skin. It is exceptionally useful when you want your face too look fresh and clean before going out or your are preparing yourself for a big occasion and you want your skin to look your best.

I use green clay on regular basis whenever I see that my pores have become more visible due to too much makeup or my hormones going crazy. My skin also suffers from having mixed type complexion (infamous T section) it can be quite difficult to use products for oily skin (my skin cannot handle it).

So I came across green clay, I tried it and I loved it from the beginning, my pores were less visible and my skin was glowing. Why?

It’s quite simple, green clay has brilliant properties acting as an absorbent and adsorbent on your skin, which mean green clay not only draws out impurities, toxins and excess oil but it also neutralizes anything in your skin that promotes black heads formation such as bacteria. The anti bacterial action of green clay may be due to iron oxidizes present in green clay via oxidation process or by attraction of cations thus competing with the nutrients necessary with bacterial growth which eventually works by preventing bacterial overgrowth (Williams, et al., 2008).

What is green clay?

Green clay (Illite) is formed by volcanic and plant residue below the surface and it contains traces of minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron oxidizes which gives its green color, dolomite, silica, manganese, phosphorus, silicon, copper and selenium. The best quality of green clay comes from France which has not been subjected to any pollution.

How to use it?

You can make cleansing face mask with green clay, you will need:

  • 1tbs of green clay
  • 1tbs of room temperature boiled water
  • 2 drops of chosen essential oil (Tee tree is very good antibacterial and lavender is also anti - bacterial)
  • Ceramic or glass bowl (avoid using metal)

Mix the ingredients together to smooth paste by adding slowly water, add 2 drops of desired essential oils and spread finely on your face area, avoiding the eyes. The mask should be thick covering all the troublesome area, keep it for approximately 10-15min and wash it off with lukewarm water. Apply moisturizer afterwards.

Please note that sometimes if the mask it’s left for longer you may feel your skin bit itchy, that’s because green clay mask tightens your skin as well and should not be kept for long time. Do not re use or store the mask once it was made.

How to store green clay?

Store green clay in the dark and cool place away from direct sunlight, heat and where is moisture. The best are glass containers.

Tips:
You can make this mask as a drawing agent when you feel that your pores are red and painful and apply only locally

Use the mask once a week or once a month depending how prone is your skin to blackheads formation
